Well, the old girl has finally outlived her usefulness. She doesn't seem to have any stamina, can barely cope with half an hour of conversation and has trouble staying awake through the night to give me my 4.30 alarm call. Any day now she was going to let me down badly so she had to go. On top of that, her network is going to close down after Christmas. The replacement model can do so much more; take photos (two lenses) store music like an MP3, download ring tones, check my email and surf the web and all that other modern stuff. Being the traditionalist though, I shall probably restrict myself to making phone calls, sending the odd text message and using the alarm facility.
I did think about getting one of the Motorola Razr V3 phones but Young A said it would have been seriously uncool if she had the same kind of phone as her stepfather so I spared her that sad fate. I've also left the thin plastic sheet over the screen for a while, that's pretty uncool as well apparently.
Of course this won't actually make my life any easier. Chillagoe still doesn't have mobile coverage, CDMA or Next G or anything. As the ad said before the ACCC jumped on Telstra over its Next G coverage claim, 'Everywhere you need it !' - NOT.
