Long before we came to Bundaberg the police had moved into a modern police station on Bourbong Street. Their old home on Quay Street had been abandoned for quite some time and had regrettably turned into a bit of an eyesore. About a year ago it was acquired by new owners and they've transformed it into the Cell Block Backpackers. They've done a magnificent restoration job. The backpacker business seems to be booming in Bundy, this is the second new one to open up in the last twelve months. Many of the backpackers find short-term employment on the local fruit and vegetable farms, mostly picking and packing as the district's agricultural industry continues to diversify away from just growing sugar cane. Amongst the more popular crops are macadamias, avocados, lychees and, surprisingly chillis.
