I commented the other day to The Dear Handbrake that I'd been feeding the Happy Jacks (aka Apostle Birds, Struthidea cinerea) in the garden and she said she didn't know what they looked like so I resolved to fix the problem.
Some refer to them as Lousy Jacks and I gather they can become a bit attention seeking at times but I like them. They hang around in groups (hence the name) and they're bold and chatty and full of character. They remind me of a bunch of school-children crowding around the window of the tuck-shop. I'm quietly amused by the fact that the Latin name of these very Australian birds starts with 'Struth'. For an alternative take on the Apostle Bird go here.
